Halbousi told al-Arabiya TV that disagreements over the government formation have decreased and Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is still a candidate for the position of Iraq’s prime minister.
He also said the Saving the Homeland Alliance formed in March between the Sadrist Movement, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the al-Siyada Coalition has ended.
The parliament speaker said his decision to resign from parliament was his alone and not part of any political party.
He also emphasized the importance of the existence of an opposition bloc in the Iraqi parliament.
Halbousi stated it was important for parliament to renew regular meetings in the presence of all blocs, adding the troubles facing Iraq cannot be dealt with outside of parliament but needed discussion and agreement within parliament.
