Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani announced he had spoken with Rashid and asked him to "protect the constitutional rights of all Iraqis, including those in the Kurdistan Region.”
He also congratulated his counterpart in the Iraqi government on Friday, October 14, Muhammed Shia al-Sudani, and affirmed his support in putting together an "inclusive cabinet” that "fosters real trust between Erbil and Baghdad”.
The Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament, Rewaz Fayaq, announced her congratulations over Rashid’s election as president and expressed her excitement for a Kurd, a member of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, to hold the position.
The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani also announced his congratulations to both the new president of Iraq and the prime minister.
He expressed his hope that a new government would form to respond to the demands of the citizens and the challenges of the future.
Iraq‘s legislators have elected Kurdish politician from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Latif Rashid as the country’s new president on Thursday.
Rashid has been elected as the fourth president of Iraq since 2003, winning both rounds of voting in the Iraqi parliament in a race with Barham Salih.
Under an unofficial agreement dating back to the 2003 US-led invasion, Iraq’s presidency – a largely ceremonial role – is held by a Kurd, while the prime minister is Shia and the parliament speaker is Sunni.
