Turkey cannot attack Shingal without US permission: politician

A Syrian Kurdish politician said the new US administration's policy on Iraq and Syria was still unclear and that Turkey could not be expected to invade Shingal or elsewhere until the United States gave the green light.

"It is too early to comment on this and it is impossible to ignore such a possibility," Alaa Barakat, a Syrian Kurdish politician, told KurdPress, commenting a possible Turkish military strike on Shingal.

He continued: "There is a potential danger in the issue of Shingal and it is not impossible to happen, but the whole thing depends on the United States."

"The new US administration's policy on global and regional issues is not yet clear and Biden has not explained his policies. As long as the United States does not give Turkey the green light for Iraq and Syria, we cannot expect Turkey to invade Shingal or elsewhere," Mr. Barakat said.

the Syrian Kurdish politician referred to the change in US policy during Biden's election and the appointment of McGurk as US foreign policy chief in the Middle East and Africa stressed that in the interview with KurdPress that "It is not possible to comment definitively yet, but what is important is that the Kurds in Syria should achieve unity to gain weight in negotiations with the powers."

The politician continued: "The new US administration has not yet taken office and the US policy on some issues is not clear, and McGurk has already been to Syria and has sufficient knowledge of the Kurdish and Syrian issues."

Mr. Barakat added: "What is important for us is the finalization of the Kurdish-Kurdish agreement, which so far has not seen any agreement between the parties. Until the Syrian Kurds are not united, the whole world will not recognize their existence."

The Syrian Kurdish politician stressed: "There is a solution to the problem of Syria and the Kurds, but it is not clear how and when this solution will lead into avail."

Alaa Barakat stated: "In the current situation, the issue of unity is one of the winning cards of the Kurds in the issue of a political solution to the issue of Syria and the Kurds, and after the new US administration takes office, it must be worked on seriously and correctly to achieve results."
