US envoy arrives in Baghdad, meets parliament speaker

<p style="text-align: left;">US envoy to the coalition against Islamic State (IS) Brett McGurk arrived in Baghdad in a surprised visit on Sunday and met with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri in Baghdad.

Iraqi Council of Representatives said in a statement that the U.S. official made the visit a day after Iraqis cast their votes in the parliamentary election on Saturday.

Both sides discussed the importance of cooperation and assistance between the parties and political entities to form a government providing services to the people.

The United States is determined to support Iraq in the fight against terror and to work together to stabilize the situation, the statement quoted McGurk as underlining.

The preliminary results of the election have been rejected by several Iraqi and Kurdish political parties amid accusations of fraud.

Wataniya Alliance, headed by former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, rejected the results of the election due to violence, fraud, purchase of votes and situation of the displaced people as well as the unclear results announced by the electoral commission.

It also called for the creation of a caretaker government until another election will be held in the country.
