Several other populated areas on Gara Mountain have been bombed by the Turkish warplanes since Wednesday when the Turkey launched Operation Claw-Eagle 2.
Turkey regularly carries out cross-border operations in northern Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, justifying its actions as necessary to combat the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged a decades-long insurgency for Kurdish rights in Turkey’s southeast.
Member of the Council of Representatives’ Security and Defense Committee Iyad al-Jubouri told NRT Arabic on Friday that Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi should take a tougher stance regarding Turkish attacks on Iraqi territory.
“The government's silence about these attacks and Turkey's breach of Iraqi sovereignty will weaken the country's position and its ability to maintain security internally and externally,” al-Jabouri said, adding that the country still faces security challenges from Islamic State (ISIS).
“Turkey is using old agreements between it and Iraq as a pretext for violating the sovereignty of [Iraq],” he continued.
“The security and territorial integrity of Iraq is a red line.”
