Iraqi lawmakers ask Erbil and Baghdad to cooperate against Turkish operations

Iraq federal lawmakers want representatives from the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to hold talks on how to prevent Turkish violations of Iraqi sovereignty, Head of the Security and Defense Committee in Iraq’s Council of Representatives Muhammad Ridha said on Tuesday, June 8.

Noting that Turkey has built a network of bases in northern Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Ridha said that there was no agreement between Ankara and Baghdad that permits Turkish facilities on Iraqi territory.
“There is coordination between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi Army to deploy a joint force in the areas where the Turkish army has a constant presence, including in Sinjar, Kirkuk, and Zakho,” the Fatah Alliance lawmaker said, adding that a parliamentary committee plans to visit Duhok governorate soon in order to observe the effects of Turkish operations.
At least twelve civilians and two Iraqi border guard commanders have been killed in Turkish airstrikes since last June, when “Operation Claw-Eagle” began.
On April 23, Ankara renewed its military campaign against the PKK in Duhok by launching “Operation Claw-Lightning,” using helicopter-borne troops and airstrikes.
Turkey justifies its operations and presence in Iraq as necessary to combat the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
