Nechirvan Barzani meets anti-IS coalition commander in Erbil

<p style="text-align:left">Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with the General Commander of Special Operations for the Global Coalition to defeat Islamic State (IS) on Saturday, May 30, to discuss the recent increase in attacks by the militant group.

During the meeting with Major General Eric Hill, Barzani stressed the importance of increasing cooperation between the Region and the Iraqi federal government in order to defeat the IS militants who continue to operate in the country, especially in the disputed areas, according to a statement released by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
They also discussed the upcoming strategic dialogue between the US and Iraq, which is supposed to begin next month. Barzani said that the Kurdistan Region was ready to participate fully in the process.
A recent increase in the number of ISIS attacks in Anbar, Saladin, Kirkuk, and Diyala has raised concerns that the militant group is slowly recovering from its defeat in Iraq two-and-a-half years ago.
Additionally, the disruption caused by the global coronavirus pandemic has interrupted some of the training programs run by the coalition for the Peshmerga and the Iraqi Security Forces.
