UNAMI denounces Turkey strikes in Shingal

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on Thursday, August 19, condemned deadly Turkish airstrikes that targeted a hospital and a vehicle in Iraq’s Shingal district this week, saying that officials were concerned about their negative effect on local security.

"Necessary precautions must be taken during military operations, including airstrikes, to protect and minimize harm to civilians who often suffer the consequences of such attacks,” the UN office said in a statement.

"It is equally important to promptly and fully investigate such incidents, establishing accountability for civilian deaths and injuries,” it added.

In airstrikes on Monday and Tuesday, Turkish drones killed six fighters from the Shingal Resistance Units (YBS) and four health workers at a local hospital. Several others were wounded.

Turkey accuses the YBS of affiliation with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Ankara routinely conducts cross-border attacks in northern Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, resulting in almost two-dozen civilian deaths since June 2020.

"UNAMI calls on all relevant parties to put the interests of citizens first, exercising restraint to avoid a dangerous escalation,” it said.

"Peace and stability are essential preconditions for reconstruction and the return of internally displaced people. The Shingal Agreement therefore needs to be implemented without delay.”

On Thursday, Aldar Khalil, a member of the joint presidency of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), also condemned the airstrikes in an interview with Firat News Agency (ANF), saying that the strikes on Shingal are part of Turkey’s efforts to undermine the Kurdish-led government next door in northeastern Syria.
