Kadhimi says Baghdad would continue to send special funds to Erbil

Iraqi Prime Minster Mustafa al-Kadhimi stated on Thursday, September 2, that the federal government will continue to send monthly transfers of $137 million to Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) until after the October 10 parliamentary elections and the formation of the new government.

Two transfers have been made so far, which the KRG says has allowed it to make full salary payments to public servants for the first time since early 2020, NRT reported.

The failure of the KRG to pay salaries was the source of major public frustration.

The transfers are not part of the 2021 Federal Budget Law, which has still not been fully implemented with regard to the Kurdistan Region, but is the result of a political deal between Kadhimi and KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

"There is negligence on both sides and there is a need for a quick solution," Kadhimi said in response to a question from an NRT reporter.

Regarding electoral preparations, Kadhimi said that the government has allocated special funds to ensure that voting runs smoothly, enabling free and fair elections.
