HDP delegation meets Kurdish politicians in Sulaimani

A delegation from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) on Sept. 27 visited the city of Sulaimani in Iraqi Kurdistan where they met with representatives of the province's ruling parties.

The delegation, led by HDP Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Meral Danis Bestas and Gaziantep lawmaker Mahmut Tugrul, initially met with Change Movement (Gorran) executives Umer Seîd Elî and Bextiyar Ewli.

Afterwards, the HDP delegation held a meeting with officials of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), including PUK Co-chair Bafeil Talabani and PUK Presidency Council Member Shanaz Ibrahim Ehmed.

The HDP delegation also met with Qubad Talabani, head of the Gorran-PUK coalition and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) deputy prime minister, Duvar news website reported.

Bestas wished success for the Gorran-PUK alliance, the Kurdistan Coalition, running in Iraq’s October 10 parliamentary elections.

“We see such diplomatic meetings as very important to promote the unity of Kurds, cooperation between Kurds,” Bestas was quoted as saying by the Erbil-based news media group Rudaw.

Qubad Talabani reportedly said in a statement that they “discussed changes in Kurdistan, Iraq and the region, and explained the objectives of the Kurdistan Coalition. I also reiterated the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s unchanged position regarding the Kurdish question in the region.”

In 2018, the PUK won six seats in the Iraqi parliament. The PUK is running in the election as part of the Kurdistan Coalition with Gorran.
