In recent weeks, a number of US officials have assured senior Syrian Kurdish leaders that US forces will not leave the Syrian Kurds alone.
"Recent US support for the Syrian Kurds means a serious impediment to the next military operation by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against the Kurds in Syria," wrote Cengiz Gunes, an expert on Kurdish issues and an Open University professor.
In his article, published in Conversation Magazine, he believes that in this case, "Erdogan cannot use the war against the Syrian Kurds to attract the votes of Turkish nationalists. As a result, announcing US support for the Syrian Kurds undermines Erdogan's political position in the upcoming elections."
"ISIS has not yet been completely defeated and the Syrian Kurds are an efficient force," Gunes wrote of why US support for the Syrian Kurds continues. "The United States also needs Kurdish forces to stabilize northeastern Syria."
