Kubis and Barzani discussed the political developments in Iraq ahead of the convening of the parliament and the formation of the new Iraqi cabinet, according to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
They also discussed the participation of Kurdish parties in “national politics,” the statement read.
According to NRT the statement added that the preparations for the Kurdistan parliamentary election, which is set for September 30, were also discussed.
Kubis also met with Masoud Barzani, former president of the Kurdistan Region and President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
Kubis stressed “the importance of the participation of Kurdistan political parties in national politics and their valuable contribution to shaping the future of stable and united Iraq while working with other national partners on resolving longstanding issues between Baghdad and Erbil, notably activating the search for solutions to the issues in Kirkuk based on Article 140 of the Constitution.”
The creation of a new Iraqi cabinet has been delayed since May, when the results of the parliamentary election underwent a recount precipitated by allegations of electoral fraud.
A joint delegation from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and KDP visited Baghdad on Saturday to meet with Iraqi political leaders to discuss the formation of a new Iraq cabinet. The delegation met with Hadi al-Amiri, head of the al-Fateh list.
An adviser for Iraqi President Fuad Masum said last week that the new parliament would meet on September 3 to begin its term.
During the session the new parliamentarians will elect a new speaker, which sets the stage for a new president to be chosen.
After that the president will appoint a new prime minister from the largest bloc in the legislature.
