Barwari’s body is in the department of Judicial Medicine in Erbil and will be transferred to Duhok, NRT reported.
Barwari was born in the Kurdish province of Duhok in 1966. He was Peshmerga for about 23 years and joined the Iraqi army in 2004 after the US invasion of Iraq.
In a post on Twitter, the US envoy to the coalition against Islamic State (IS) Brett McGurk described him as “a heroic fighter and commander in the campaign against IS to whom the world owes a debt of gratitude.”
He expressed condolences to "his family and fellow warriors."
During US’s attack on Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003, Barwari worked with the US army.
He had received training from the US army’s Special Forces and led Iraqi special forces in anti-IS operations.
