According to Sharpress, after Delshad Shahab, a senior member of the Leadership Council of the Kurdistan Regional Government, announced that the KDP intends to start talks with the PUK in order to resolve the existing disputes and problems, the Council of Secretaries of the PUK Political Bureau convened a meeting chaired by the party's co-chairman, Baffle Talabani, to discuss the resumption of talks with the KDP.

A source in the meeting said that the participants emphasized that they would welcome talks with the KDP negotiating team to resolve differences between the two parties on Kurdistan and Iraq, and that the PUK would respond positively to future talks with the Kurdistan Democratic Party.

However, the PUK stressed the internal issues of the Kurdistan Region should be discussed in a separate case, and the issues related to the Iraqi central government and relations with Baghdad should be discussed in another separate case, in possible talks with the KDP.

In recent months, however, relations between the two parties have been strained over issues such as the presidency of Iraq, the governorship of Kirkuk, the Kurdistan Region revenues and natural gas exports. Meanwhile some sources have reported that the Kurdistan Region's President Nechirvan Barzani, as the deputy leader of the KDP, has traveled to Sulaimani and met with senior Patriotic Union of Kurdistan officials.
