The three-day party congress of the KDP commenced on Thursday in the city of Duhok, marking the 14th congress during which Masoud Barzani was reelected as the party’s president.
Meanwhile, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani was reappointed as his first deputy, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani was elected as his second deputy.
After KDP’s congress concluded on Sunday the PUK sent out a congratulatory message to the party, extending its congratulations.
“We hope the recommendations and the decisions of the congress be in the favor of succeeding our nation’s experience and harmony as well as better governing, deserving the Kurdistan Region people,” PUK in the statement said.
KDP was not been able to hold congress since 2010 whereas according to the KDP by-law, the congress should be held once every four years.
KDP blamed the war against the Islamic State (ISIS) as well as the Covid-19 pandemic for the party’s unavailability to hold its congress for such a long while.
In 2018 when the latest parliamentary elections of the Kurdistan Region took place, KDP won 45 seats, occupying the top government positions, including the president, prime minister, and deputy parliament speaker.
