Medical sources in the Idlib Health Directorate, in northwestern Syria, told North Press that the number of cholera deaths recorded in the region has risen to 23 deaths and 572 cases since September 2022 until March 3.
The source noted that after the earthquake, the region recorded an increase in the number of cholera infections and deaths, as three deaths were reported in less than ten days. The daily statistics witnessed a noticeable increase, which prompted fears of a spike in cases of the disease.
After the earthquake, dozens of camps were built in Jindires, and Afrin, north of Aleppo; Salqin, Harem, and Kafr Takharim, in Idlib; and other quake-affected areas. These camps lack hygiene, infrastructure, and sanitation networks, according to the same source.
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing thousands and injuring many more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) warned on Friday of the urgent need of a sustainable response to mental health and psychosocial needs to prevent a “second disaster” in Syria and Turkey after the February 6 earthquake.
