Syrian Kurds should not count on France support; expert tells Kurdpress

<p style="text-align: left;">A Kurdish affairs expert in American Enterprise Research Center believes the U.S. and Russia are not reliable friends of Kurds and the reality also does not mean that France is a very good friend of the Kurds.

The U.S., a five-year-long friend of Syrian Kurds, is leaving the country as Turkey is repeatedly threatening the Kurds of occupying their region. U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to withdraw all U.S. troops from Syria but step back from the decision as officials in Washington have stated that 400 troops of the country will remain in Syria. Trump, however, has stressed that Europe and France, in particular, should take control of the situation and lead the operation in Syria after withdrawal from the Kurdish regions in Syria.

Therefore, Kurds in Syria sent some officials to Paris to urge President Emanuel Macron to back the Kurds against any possible Turkey attack.

The political expert who Kurdpress talked to, Michael Rubin, stressed that the Kurds should not count on Paris too much, adding that &ldquo;it is true that France&rsquo;s support to Kurds is historical, particularly during former President Daniel Mitran, but the Kurds should not count on France in Syria.&rdquo;

He pointed to the economic priorities of the western states, including France, in the Middle East and stated that the most important issue is that the civil war in Syria will end and the multi-billion-dollars effort to reconstruct the state would start and a part of the money would come from Damascus and cooperation with the Syrian central government.

He went on to add that the problem the Kurds face with is that France has a long history of preferring money to its allies, mentioning to the long friendship between former French President Jacques Chirac and Saddam Hussein.

Rubin finally reiterated that &ldquo;to be frank, Kurds would not be considered a complete partner in the future of Syria.&rdquo;
