"According to the information published by some parties close to the Turkish government, Ankara may establish a military base in the Yazidi city of Shingal in the province of Nainawa," said Kifah Mahmoud.
According to Sputnik, Mahmoud said: "The mentioned parties predicted that the Iraqi government would fail in expelling the forces of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) from the Shingal region. As a result, Ankara will establish a military base in the region similar to the Ba'ashiqa base near Mosul.
The political expert clarified: "After his visit to Kurdistan region, the Turkish Defense Minister emphasized on cooperation between Erbil and Ankara and the improvement of relations between Erbil and Baghdad with the aim of resolving the problems between them. It showed that security concerns about the presence of PKK forces in the border areas of Erbil and Dohuk provinces and Qandil and Shingal regions is of maximum importance."
Kifah Mahmoud pointed out: The interaction between the central government and the Kurdistan Region about the PKK shows the seriousness of the parties, especially after the signature of the Shingal agreement, and the parties intend to prevent the PKK from conducting military operations against Turkey from Iraq or to make it (PKK) leave the areas where it is present and active in northern Iraq."
In the end, Barzani's advisor emphasized: "Recent meetings have shown that the Iraqi government, the Kurdistan Region and Turkey are working towards this goal."
