German defense minister arrives in Erbil

<p style="text-align: left;">German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen early on Sunday, February 11, arrived in the Kurdistan Region capital of Erbil where she saluted Germany's military advisers.

Before her visit to Erbil, the minister met with Iraqi officials in Baghdad after the victory declared by Iraq against Islamic State (IS).

According to NRT Leyen attended in the ceremonial opening of a military hospital which was funded by Germany to provide medical treatment for the Peshmerga forces wounded in the fight against IS.

The government of Germany provided the budget for a 200-bed hospital for the Kurdistan Region&rsquo;s Ministry of Peshmerga.

The budget provided by Germany to the hospital amounted to more than 5 million Euros, according to a Peshmerga official.

Germany has been supporting and assisting the Peshmerga forces with weapons and military equipment in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) since 2015 and the program was to set continue until January 31, 2018.

The first phase of German military aid supplied arms for more than 4,000 Peshmerga forces and included 4,000 G-3 rifles, one million rounds of ammunition, 4,000 P1-type pistols, 500,000 bullets, 20 Milan anti-tank systems, 300 anti-tank missiles, 100 bazookas, 5,000 grenades, and 50 military vehicles.

Germany delivered 70 tons of weapons to the Kurdish Peshmerga on August 16, which included 1,500 rifles, 100 shoulder-fired rockets and three armored vehicles.
