Ali-Akbar Velayati, heading a high-ranking delegation, in his three-day visit will meet with senior Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin.
Delivering a speech at the Russian think tank Valdai Discussion Club and holding talks with some ministers are among the itinerary of the visit.
Iran's Foreign Ministry has previously announced that the country would send special envoy to other countries to clarify Tehran's stances on the illegal move by the US Donald Trump in withdrawing from Iran nuclear deal.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the US, France, Britain, China, and Russia) plus Germany signed the nuclear deal in 2015. Iran accepted to curb its nuclear program in exchange for economic sanctions relief.
The US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in May, calling it the worst deal ever.
