Iraqi Defense Minister visits Kirkuk today

Iraq’s Minister of Defense Juma Inad arrived in Kirkuk on Thursday, May 20, for meetings with the governor and senior security officials.

Inad is expected to tour the new Kirkuk Operations Room with officials from the Iraqi Security Forces and the Peshmerga, NRT reported.
The aim of the visit is to discuss coordination between those two forces to address the security vacuum in the disputed areas, which allows Islamic State (ISIS) militants to stage attacks against both civilian and military targets.
Despite losing the territorial caliphate, ISIS continues to operate in both Iraq and Syria, using the rugged and remote border areas to shift material and militants.
On Monday, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) official Mahmoud Sangawi announced that a coordination center focused on the Garmian area will open this week.
