US-led coalition should remain in Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani stresses

<p style="text-align:left">In his meeting with the Belgian foreign minister in Erbil, the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani stressed the need for the anti-IS international coalition to remain in in Iraq and the Kurdish region.

In a meeting with visiting Belgium's Foreign Minister Felipe Goffin in Erbil on Monday evening, Barzani praised Belgium's support and cooperation with the Kurdish region as part of the international coalition against IS, and stressed that Iraq and Kurdistan still need to continue cooperation with the international coalition in the war on terror, said a statement from the Kurdistan Regional presidency.

According to the statement the two also discussed ties and tensions in Erbil-Baghdad relations, and Barzani stated the region wants to resolve all issues and conflicts according to the constitution and to become a factor of stability in the region.

Barzani also reiterated the Kurdish region's support for the demands of the Iraqi demonstrators, who want a better life and service from the government.

The Belgian Foreign Minister called the visit "an important issue in Iraq and the Kurdish region," and stressed the role of the Kurdish region in fighting against terror and efforts to create stability and reduce tensions and peaceful coexistence among various ethnic and religious factions in the autonomous Kurdish region in the north of Iraq.

Goffin arrived on Monday to Kurdistan Region from the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The official of the foreign relations in Kurdistan Regional Government received Goffin at Erbil International Airport.

Goffin arrived earlier on a previously announced official visit to Baghdad and held a press conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Muhammad Ali al-Hakim.

During his visit to Erbil, the Belgian foreign minister will meet with senior Kurdish regional officials to discuss continuing efforts against the IS terrorist group and his country's assistance to the region.

In separate meetings with Hakim and Iraqi President Barham Saleh, Goffin discussed relations between Iraq and Belgium in various fields, issues of mutual interest and local, regional and international developments.
