Dr. William Park, a Senior Lecturer in the Defense Studies Department at King's College London expressed his doubts about the support of the new US administration led by Joe Biden for the Syrian Kurds in the face of another Turkish invasion. He predicted that some actors in Syria, such as Russia and the United States, would oppose a new Turkey attack on the Kurds, but that Joe Biden would not be able to protect the Kurds if Turkey conducts such an attack.

About Turkey goal in conducting operations in the Kurdistan Region, Dr. Park stated that Turkey plans "to defeat or at least limit the mobility of the PKK [Kurdistan Workers' Party], most especially between northern Iraq and northeastern Syria."

"Turkey remains an ally of sorts and the KDP [Kurdistan Democratic Party], a semi-ally of the US, is cooperative with Turkey or at minimum uncritical and the PKK is officially regarded by the US as a proscribed terrorist organization," the professor said about the reason behind Turkey's silence in face of the attacks.

The King College professor said about the possibility of better US- Turkey ties during Biden's presidency that "it (the US) does want to mend ties with Turkey, but this would require Turkey to give up the S-400, cool its relations with Russia and align policies in Syria, Libya and Iran with those of the US."

Biden the administration claimed that is not in favor of an American oil company agreement with Syrian Kurds and according to FY 2022 budget, the U.S military aids to Syrian Kurds have been reduced. How would you analyze these facts?

"[Former US President Donald] Trump used the supposed oil interest in northwestern Syria as a way to justify his U-turn on US withdrawal from Syria. The oil is worth little in fact, and the US has little stake in siding too overtly with a force that might threaten the integrity of the Syrian state and which Turkey regards as a threat. ISIS is largely defeated, so the PYD [Syrian Democratic Forces] is less important now to the US, hence the reduced backing," he said about a Biden Administration decision to stop backing Delta Crescent Energy in being exempted from paying taxes for operating in Syrian Kurdish regions.

Do you see predict Turkey's new attach to Syrian Kurds?

About the possibility of a new Turkey offensive against the Kurds in northern Syria, the university professor told Kurdpress that "That is risky for Turkey to conduct operations against the Kurds and the PYD as Russia, and even Iran, and to a degree the US and some EU countries like France would oppose it."

"The US support to the Kurds depends on different situations but at last the US and Joe Biden would not protect the Kurds against a possible Turkey offensive," Dr. Park said about US reaction to a possible Turkey operation into Syrian Kurdistan.

Answering the question that the EU and the US are sanctioning Belarus and Russia for suppressing the opposition in the countries however, they are silent in face of [Turkey President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan's pressure on Kurds, the political expert stated that "the EU and the US have security, economic and political interests in Turkey which they do not have with Russia and Belarus."

He further expressed his doubt about a new peace process between the PKK and Turkey, and stated that " I doubt it and it would not be a serious process because Erdogan would cede little to the PKK/ HDP and also because Erdogan relies on nationalist appeal for his domestic electoral support."

"Overall, you seen to believe that Western policies should be dictated by human rights concerns. But they are not. Human rights issues are instrumentalised, especially against the West's adversaries, for example, Russia and China. But human rights abuses can be tolerated in countries the West values in some way, not only Turkey but also in countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and etc.," the professor told Kurdpress about the reason behind the West's silence as Turkey is suppressing the Kurds extensively.
