Addressing tensions between Iran and the United States, al-Kadhimi also said that Iraq is not “an arena for settling scores” and said that he would have a “serious dialogue” with the US about the presence of its forces on Iraqi soil. Baghdad and Washington are scheduled to engage in a strategic dialogue starting in June.
While the economic and health crises will require great focus, he also said that the wanted to ensure that all weapons “in the hands of individuals, tribes, or armed factions” are brought under the control of the state.
“This issue has become a pressing priority that requires real solutions, which we will work on in a sound and serious manner,” al-Kadhimi said.
During the meeting, he also signaled that he wanted to “establish a national vision” on which solid and efficient state institutions can be built.
