Delir Hassan, the governor of Khanaqin in northeast bordering province of Diyala in eastern Iraq, said in an interview with Baghdad's al-Youm news portal on Saturday, May 16, that the security situation in the Kurdish city's suburbs is very dire, where IS-affiliated elements are attacking almost every day.
Hassan further said the security situation in the Khanaqin is very dire, where the bloodshed of innocent civilians and farmers continues, who are on high alert at nights because of the unprecedented activity of IS elements and the recurrence of their gunfire and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) attacks.
The governor of Khanaqin added: Khanaqin is currently witnessing IS bloodshed and attacks almost every day and the people are under enormous psychological pressure, as citizens witness funeral scenes of the victims from time to time.
IS's current goal is to evacuate the Kurdish villages surrounding Khanaqin by frequent attacks on them and forcing people to emigrate, which is a dangerous sign, Hassan further said.
The governor of Khanaqin also emphasized the current situation is unacceptable, and 'we will have important meetings with security and government commanders to resolve the issue of bloodshed in the city and its villages.'
Hassan ultimately stressed the security situation in Khanaqin is in its most dangerous situation since 2003, and we are really concerned about the increase of terrorist attacks and the deaths of more people.
