The Peshmerga had set up a checkpoint on a road near Derash village, when a vehicle carrying members of the People’s Defense Forces (HPG) approached, the two forces exchanged weapons fire, a source who spoke on condition of anonymity told NRT.

Firat News Agency, which is close to the PKK, initially reported that three HPG fighters were “seriously injured” in the clash. On Monday, Hawar News Agency, which similarly close to the PKK, reported that one of the injured fighters had died.

Additionally, an informed source speaking on condition of anonymity told NRT that a member of the Roj Peshmerga affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party's (KDP) Zeravani forces was also killed during the clash. He was named as First Lieutenant Abdulrahman Sheikhmous Amin, originally from Turkey's Sirnak province.

Over the summer Turkey stepped up its cross-border operations in the Kurdistan Region, justifying its actions as necessary to combat the PKK. At least twelve civilians have been killed in Turkish airstrikes in Erbil and Duhok governorates since June 15.

In recent weeks, tensions have mounted between the PKK and the KDP, which the dominant political party in Duhok and Erbil, and has close political and economic ties with Ankara.

One Peshmerga was killed and several others wounded in a clash with the PKK on November 3.
