Gunmen open fire on KDP branch in Chamchamal

<p dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">Gunmen opened fire on the Kurdistan Democratic Party&amp;rsquo;s (KDP) 19 Branch office in Chamchamal from three sides on Monday evening, December 14.

A source from the branch who spoke under condition of anonymity told NRT that the shooting only caused material damage to the building and that no one was hurt. A spokesperson for Chamchamal Health Directorate confirmed that no injured people had been admitted to local hospitals as a result of the shooting.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack, which was the second such incident at a KDP branch office in the district this week.

Earlier this month, protesters angry at the Kurdistan Regional Government&rsquo;s (KRG) decisions to delay and cut public sector salaries and its inability to combat corruption and provide basic public services like electricity and water took to the streets across Sulaimani and Halabja governorates.

Demonstrators burned dozens of party and government offices, including those belonging to the KDP, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and the Change Movement (Gorran), including in Chamchamal, while the security forces responded with tear gas and live bullets.

Nine people died during the more than week-long demonstrations, including seven protesters who were shot dead by the security forces.

Though incidents are infrequent, the offices of political parties in the Kurdistan Region are commonly targeted in potshot attacks during times of political tension.

In June, shots were fired at the KDP&rsquo;s Fourth Branch offices in downtown Sulaimani.
