Parliament extends Turkey cross-border military operation in Iraq and Syria

The Turkish parliament on Tuesday, October 26, approved a two-year extension of the country’s troop deployment in cross-border military operations in Iraq and Syria.

The Justice and Development Party (AK Party), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), and the Good Party (IYI) voted in favor of the bill, while the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) voted against it.

The military operations are currently authorized until October 30.

Turkey regularly conducts cross-border operations into the Kurdistan Region, northern Iraq, and Syria, arguing that they are necessary to combat the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the People's Defense Units (YPG) or advance its interests in wider Syria.
