US expresses concern over Turkey shelling of Kobani

The US Embassy in Damascus issued a statement on Sunday, April 24, following Turkey’s attack last week on Kobani in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

"We are deeply concerned by reports of shelling on Kobani and deplore any loss of civilian life,” the embassy announced in a statement posted to Twitter. "The United States calls on all parties to deescalate.”

The city center of Kobani was hit with artillery shelling from the Turkish military on Friday, wounding two civilians.

Farhad Shami, the head of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) media center, told Al-Monitor on Friday that Kurdish forces had informed the US-led coalition of Turkey’s intensified attacks but there had been no "reaction in the field.”

A Turkish drone strike killed three members of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), part of the SDF, on Wednesday, including a member of the YPJ Command and the co-chair of the city’s defense committee, Firat News Agency said.

Turkey has also carried out shelling and drone strikes in Tal Tamer in the northeast governorate of Hasaka and in Ayn Issa in Raqqa governorate. Both are part of the AANES.

Rojava Information Center (RIC) said a drone attack that struck a vehicle in a village near Ayn Issa on Friday was the fifth drone strike since Turkey began its Operation Claw Lock targeting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on April 18.

RIC said on Thursday three members of the Assyrian Kabour Guards were wounded in a Turkish drone strike near Tal Tamer and in less than a week during the Easter holiday, a member of the Assyrian community was killed in the town and another five wounded when the Turkish military shelled the area.

The US embassy previously expressed concern on Thursday over attacks on several offices belonging to the opposition Kurdistan National Council (KNC) in the AANES last week.

The Democratic Union Party (PYD), the leading political party in the autonomous region, has denied responsibility for the attacks.
