Head of the Gorran General Assembly, Rauf Osman said in an interview with the Voice of America published on Wednesday, August 29, that both parties had the same view on postponing the election.
“We anticipate a big fraud. The Kurdistan Democratic Party wants to attain 50+1 of the votes so it can form the Region’s next government alone and rewrite constitution,” he added.
The PUK and the Change Movement agreed that the current election commission will not be able to hold election with the current voter lists, the Gorran official noted.
The election commission set September 5 as the date for the election campaign to kick off, with the formal campaign slated to end on September 28 at 8 a.m., two days ahead of holding the election.
A total of 29 lists have submitted the names of 773 candidates who will be contesting 111 seats across the Kurdistan Region.
In May, KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani issued a decree that scheduled the parliamentary election for September 30.
The election was postponed once before. Parliamentary and Presidential elections in the Kurdistan Region were due to take place on November 1, 2017, but were cancelled when tensions rose significantly after Iraqi forces retook Kirkuk and other disputed areas in mid-October.
