The schedule of al-Abadi’s Monday’s visit is still unclear, according to the Associated Press.

At least thirteen people have been killed in protests in Basra over the past week and over a hundred injured.

During the demonstrations, a number of government building, party offices, and the Iranian consulate were burned.

Protesters are demanding potable water, reliable electricity, jobs, and an end to corruption.

Abadi has been criticized for his handling of the crisis as he has attempted to remain on as prime minister. He had been working with Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr’s Sairoon List, but they have now demanded that he step down.

Rival for the job, Hadi al-Amiri, and the al-Fateh Alliance have also called for the resignation of his caretaker government.
