Kurdish woman nominates herself for Iraqi presidency

<p style="text-align: left;">Srwa Abdulwahid, a former Kurdish member of Iraqi Parliament, said on Sunday, September 23, that she has nominated herself as the first female candidate for the Iraqi presidency.

Abdulwahid said that she hopes that she will win the position as an independent candidate and become the first female president in the history of Iraq, NRT reported.

Abdulwahid became the second independent candidate for a position that has been held by a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan since 2005.

Another three politicians are running for the position, with at least one more expected to be announced in the coming days.

Abdulwahid was a deputy for the Change Movement (Gorran) and the head of her party bloc during the previous parliament.

As part of efforts to form the next Iraqi government after May 12 election, a new speaker of parliament was elected on September 15, setting the stage for a new president to be chosen.

The new president will then appoint a prime minister from the largest bloc in the legislature.
