Barham Salih's nomination has been rejected by the KDP and the party has fielded its own candidate, Fuad Hussein, condemning the PUK’s pick of Salih as a “unilateral” decision.
According to NRT the purpose of Friday’s meeting between Barzani and Salih was reportedly to discuss the potential for agreeing to a single presidential candidate before a parliament session on Monday, October 1, when an initial vote for the position will be held.
Earlier on Thursday, the speaker of the Council of Representatives declared that seven candidates had met the qualifications necessary for the position.
The candidates are Barham Salih of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Faud Hussein of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Umar Barzinji of the Kurdistan Islamic Union, and Abdul Karim Ali Abtan of the National Coalition.
Srwa Abdulwahid, Sardar Abdullah, and Latif Rashid are running as independents.
Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi had previously announced that 31 candidates had been nominated, but the majority of them were excluded from the final list.
