Agid Sheikh Ahmed, a reporter in Kobani, said on Friday in response to a Kurdpress question whether the Turkish army had sent troops to the northern border areas of Syria: "So far, the Turkish army has not sent troops to the border areas and Turkish threats are more media threats."

He continued: "But these are real threats and the political and military officials and the people of Syrian Kurdistan are taking these threats serious and are preparing to face any danger."

About two weeks ago, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to launch a military operation in northern Syria to establish a "safe zone" 30km deep in Syria. Erdogan also announced on Wednesday that "this military operation targets Tel Rifat and Manbij areas."

Stéphane Dujarric, the Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, stressed the commitment of all parties to the 2019 ceasefire agreement in northern Syria.

"Syria needs a political solution, not a new military operation," Dujarric said in a press release on May 24, stressing that the United Nations is committed to Syria's territorial integrity.
