Rojava declares state of emergency in response to looming threat from Turkey

The Autonomous Region of North and East Syria (Rojava) declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, July 6, in response to the threat of a military offensive from Turkey.

According to NRT Rojava has issued decisions to prevent Turkish attacks while protecting residents there, and has decided all daily necessities and fuel for public transportation will be provided.
Rojava authorities have also decided to make necessary amendments to face Turkey’s attack.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a parliamentary group meeting of his Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Ankara on April 21 that the Turkish military would broaden its operations against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in connection with its Operation Claw Lock that it began against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Kurdistan Region, Asharq al-Awsat said.
The Turkish Defense Ministry said it launched a large-scale offensive on April 23 in north Syria against the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the primary component of the SDF, after a police officer was killed one day before in an operation by the Afrin Liberation Forces (HRE) targeting an armored vehicle in the Syrian city of Mare.
The SDF said it had no information on deaths or injuries in the operation or who was behind it.
The Commander-in-Chief of the SDF, Mazloum Abdi, said on April 23 that Turkey’s attacks on the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES or Rojava) would damage the SDF battle against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.
