Unknown gunmen opened fire on the family’s car at dawn on Thursday. The five victims are from Amedi, in the Duhok Governorate of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, according to a local media outlet.

Hours later, Kurdistan Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, denounced the attack, and called on Turkey to reveal the motives behind it and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

He also offered his sincere condolences to the victims’ relatives.

The reasons behind the attack are still unknown, though the Kurdish-majority regions of Turkey have periodically witnessed racist attacks against Kurds.

The victims’ car carried a Duhok registration plate, suggesting it was “systematically targeted.”

The family was in Turkey for a medical procedure.
