PUK officials, U.S. military delegation discuss Peshmerga reforms

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and a U.S. military delegation along with the U.S. consul general in the Kurdistan Region, on Sunday discussed reforms within the Peshmerga ministry.

Qubad Talabani of the PUK received a U.S. military delegation with the consul general, in the Kurdistan Region capital, Erbil, read Talabani’s office in a statement.
Talabani was accompanied by members of the PUK politburo administrators, Rafaat Abdullah and Darbaz Kosrat Rasoul.
It was also joined by the chief of staff of the Peshmerga forces unit 70 and the secretary-general of the Peshmerga ministry.
The PUK and the U.S. delegation discussed the Peshmerga reforms and both sides’ coordination for implementation of the memorandum of understanding of the ministry of Peshmerga and the U.S. Department of Defense, it added.
The memorandum was first signed in 2016 which through the United States reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Peshmerga Forces’ contributions to Defeat the Islamic State operations as a component of the Iraqi Security Forces.
Last September, the U.S. and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) renewed the memorandum.
Moreover, the PUK-U.S. delegation meeting highlighted the international anti-ISIS coalition efforts which always support the reforms issues within the Peshmerga forces.
During the meeting, the PUK told the U.S. delegation that they tasked all of its delegates to facilitate the reform process within the Peshmerga ministry, according to the statement.
