Kurdistan Region to expand ties with Iran, envoy tells Kurdpress

<p style="text-align: left;">The representative of the Kurdistan Region told Kurdpress in an interview that the region is willing to expand its ties, commercial in particular, with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Nazim Dabbaq told Kurdpress that despite the U.S. sanctions against Iran, the Kurdish government plans to improve its ties with Tehran, adding that the recent visit of the Iraqi Kurdish President Barham Salih was within the attempt.

The visit was in line with the policies of the revered Iraqi Kurdish President Jalal Talabani who always was stressing on boosting ties with Tehran, Dabbaq said, continuing to say that Iran has a long joint border with Iraq and it is impossible to neglect Tehran&rsquo;s role and importance in economic, security and political ties with the region and the rest of Iraq.

He further added that the ties between the Kurdish region and Iran are increasing and bilateral meetings have been held within the goal.

The two sides are also enjoying increasing ties in other fields including scientific and cultural relations and underscored the importance of expanding the ties as well, he added.

Dabbaq further told Kurdpress that the negative impact of the U.S. sanctions against Iran on Erbil-Tehran ties are undeniable but the impacts are not so big to leave a very negative impact on the relations, stressing that the region&rsquo;s policy is not to go with the sanctions against Iran and the Kurdish region follows Baghdad in relation with Iran.
