Iran FM Zarif meets Bashar al-Assad

<p style="text-align: left;">Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus early on Tuesday, April 16.

According to ISNA Zarif and Assad discussed bilateral ties, regional issues, latest developments in Syria peace talks in Astana and the deals made between Damascus and Tehran during Iran first vice president visit to Syria.

Zarif was officially received by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, Iran's Ambassador to the country Javad Torkabadi and other Syrian-based Iranian officials at the airport.

A number of senior officials at Iran's Foreign Ministry are accompanying Zarif in the one-day visit to Syria.

He is scheduled to meet Syria Prime Minister Imad Khamis and Foreign Minister Valid al-Moalem as well.

The visit is being paid upon an official invitation by President Assad which was offered during his trip to Tehran in February.

The Iranian foreign minister last visited Syria in October 2018. The trip will be followed by another one-day visit to Turkey.
