Europe and US are not seeking Kurds interests: analyst

A foreign policy and defense issue analyst told Kurdpress in an interview that neither the U.S. not Europe are seeking the interests of the Kurds and both use the Kurds for their own interests and are not willing to pressure Turkey to make peace with the Kurds.

“With IS defeated, the relationship between Washington and the Syrian Kurds already shows signs of cooling. Kurdish forces were useful allies for the United States in the fight against that terrorist organization, but now a close relationship complicates Washington’s relationship with fellow NATO member Turkey. Trump’s praise means little or nothing. U.S. leaders will not make a serious effort to help Syrian Kurds establish and maintain an independent region in northern Syria,” said Ted Galen Carpenter about the ties between the U.S. and the Syrian Kurds who control the northern part of Syria.

“The U.S. and the EU probably cannot force Turkey to accept such a deal, and there are few signs that they even want to make the effort,” he further added.

The analyst further stated that “Kurds in Iraq and Syria have been a useful political and military tool for the United States against both Saddam Hussein and Bashar al-Assad. But Washington regards Kurdish desires for an independent homeland as an undesirable, disruptive factor the threatens the territorial integrity of Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. U.S. leaders will not back that agenda. Russia’s position is harder to decipher, but Moscow’s rapprochement with Ankara suggests a similar willingness to sacrifice the Kurdish goal of an independent homeland.”

Carpenter a senior fellow at Cato Institute also told Kurdpress that “United States and other great powers have exploited the Kurds as allies on several occasions, only to betray them as soon as convenient. The United States is doing the same on this occasion, preferring to keep Turkey, Iraq, and even Syria intact.”
