Kurdistan parliament calls for government formation

<p style="text-align: left;">The Kurdistan Parliament called on the political parties to step up efforts to form a new government through consensus and understanding.

The parliament released a statement on Tuesday, June 4, on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr saying one of the nicest features of Eid is reconciliation and tolerance.

&ldquo;We now need the tolerance and unity in the Kurdistan Region,&rdquo; the parliament stated.

The parliament called on the parties participating in the formation of a new government to swiftly accelerate the formation of ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government to further serve the people, according to the statement.

Tension between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) hit a high after the PUK boycotted a parliamentary election on the election of the Kurdistan Region&rsquo;s president on May 28.

PUK said the KDP had not stepped up to implement their agreement.

&ldquo;The Kurdistan Democratic Party has not stepped up to implement our agreements with it. The KDP always makes obstacles for the nomination of a governor from the PUK [in Kirkuk, as we have agreed on].&rdquo;

The Kurdistan Parliament elected Nechirvan Barzani as new President of the Kurdistan Region with 68 out of 81 votes on Tuesday.

On May 30, the parliament set June 10 as the date for Barzani's inauguration as the new President of the Kurdistan Region.
