PUK will participate in Kurdistan Region president inauguration session: spokesman

<p style="text-align: left;">The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) said on Sunday, June 9, it would participate in the inauguration ceremony of President-elect of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani.

PUK Spokesman Latif Sheikh Omer said a delegation from the party&rsquo;s politburo would attend the inauguration ceremony on Monday, NRT reported.

&ldquo; At the official invitation of the Kurdistan Democratic Party [KDP] Politburo, a PUK Politburo delegation will participate in the inauguration ceremony,&rdquo; Omer told PUK-affiliated media.

Barzani is supposed to swear in as the new President of the Kurdistan Region at Saad Abdullah Hall in Erbil at 11:00 a.m. on Monday.

The Kurdistan Parliament elected Nechirvan Barzani as new president of the Kurdistan Region with 68 out of 81 votes on May 28.

Barzani invited Iraqi President Barham Salih in a phone call to participate in his swearing-in ceremony, the federal presidency media office said in a statement on June 3.

A great number of the Kurdish, Iraqi and foreign representatives and political parties are expected to attend the ceremony.

The phone call coincided with the deepening strife between the KDP and PUK over the issue of the Kirkuk governor. Both parties&rsquo; ties hit a high after the PUK caucus in the parliament boycotted the parliamentary session on May 28.

&ldquo; The Kurdistan Democratic Party [KDP] has not stepped up to implement our agreements with it. The KDP always makes obstacles for the nomination of a governor from the PUK [in Kirkuk, as we have agreed on],&rdquo; PUK said.

The New Generation Movement caucus in the Kurdistan parliament said on Saturday that it would not attend the ceremony which is held outside the parliament&rsquo;s building.

&ldquo; The current situation in the Kurdistan Region needs more respect to the legitimate institutions and parliament, where is the first source of legislation and monitoring the government. The executive power should obey the parliament. In contrast to all the democratic traditions, the parliament is taken into service of the persons,&rdquo; the movement said in a statement.

The New Generation caucus also boycotted the parliamentary session to elect the new president on May 28.
