Five Hashd al-Shaabi fighters killed in ISIS attack

Five Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) members were killed on Tuesday, February 2, during confrontations with Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Naft Khana area on the outskirts of Khanaqin district northeast of Diyala governorate.

Media Directorate of the PMF or Hashd al-Shaabi Authority said in a statement that its Brigade 1st had launched a mop-up operation to clear the area of the presence of ISIS militants, as they were subjected to a violent attack carried out by the ISIS elements in the area.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iraq’s Federal Investigation and Intelligence Agency said that the security forces have arrested five ISIS suspects including a woman in separate areas in Kirkuk governorate.

An ISIS detachment was dismantled including a commander, transporter and soldier and a suicide bomber in separate raids in Saladin and Diyala governorate, the Iraqi National Service cited Yehia Rasool, spokesperson for the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed forces.

Federal security forces have launched several operations to track down ISIS elements following a deadly twin bomb blasts in central Baghdad in January that resulted in at least 32 deaths and wounding over a hundred others, NRT reported

In December, 2017, the Iraqi Security Forces, in cooperation with the Peshmerga and the PMF and aided by Coalition airstrikes, declared victory over ISIS. Since then, the militant group has resorted to guerrilla hit-and-run tactics, but remains a potent threat in some parts of the country.
