The US and its allies fired more than 100 cruise missiles at Syria in the aftermath of a suspected chemical weapons attack which killed more than 70 people last weekend in Douma.

Russian defense ministry said as many as 71 missiles have been intercepted out of 103 by Russia's main anti-missile system in Syria.

“Syrian air defense systems S-125, S-200, Buk and Kvadrat took part in repelling the missile strike,” an official for Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Saturday. “These air defense complexes were produced in the Soviet Union more than 30 years ago.”

Syrian state media called the strikes a “flagrant violation of international law” and Russia has responded angrily.

Missiles were launched from manned aircraft and ships which hit three of Syria’s main chemical weapons facilities, said U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

Meanwhile, Turkey welcomed the Western strikes and considered it as an "appropriate response" in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack that left dozens dead.

"We welcome this operation which has eased humanity's conscience in the face of the attack in Douma, largely suspected to have been carried out by the regime," the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.
