SDF launched anti-ISIS operation in Deir Ezzor

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Friday, February 5, that dozens of Islamic State (ISIS) militants were arrested and a large amount of ammunition was seized over the past 24 hours in a large-scale operation in Deir Ezzor along the Syrian-Iraqi border.

The operation was in response to escalating ISIS attacks in the area, exemplified by to the assassination of two women officials working for the Autonomous Administration of North East Syria (AANES) in Hasaka’s al-Dashisha district in January, NRT reported.

Various components of the SDF, including the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the Women Protection Units (YPJ), and the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) participated in the operation, which began on Thursday.

At least 234 civilians, including seventeen children and eleven women, have been killed by ISIS sleeper cells in northeastern Syria since June 2018, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
