“We condemn this lawless decision which prevents an equal and fair election. Every day that Demirtas, the candidate of millions, is not with his voters will cast a shadow on the June 24 elections and put into question its legitimacy,” the HDP tweeted.
Last week, the HDP filed an appeal for Demirtas to be released before the snap election in June, saying his detention jeopardized voter freedom, NRT reported.
On May 4, HDP officially nominated imprisoned former co-leader Selahattin Demirtas to run for president in the Turkey’s snap election on June 24.
Demirtas has been held in the Edirne Prison since November 2018. He is charged with links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and faces up to 142 years in prison if convicted. Demirtas has denied the charges.
