<p style="text-align: left;">The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Leadership Council met on Saturday, September 7, and settled on December 7 as the date of the long-delayed party congress. During a press conference, PUK Spokesperson Latif Sheikh Omar said that the decision was unanimous.

The PUK&rsquo;s last all-party meeting was in 2010, before the illness and death of party leader Jalal Talabani.
Notoriously faction-ridden, the party has delayed the congress for years, fearful that the meeting would deepen those rifts. However, pressure has been building over the summer to pick a date.
Current First Deputy Secretary-General Korat Rasul said last month that he had not yet decided whether to put his name forward for the top party job, which has remained vacant since Talabani&rsquo;s passing, NRT reported.
Other than deciding the date of the next congress, the Leadership Council also discussed the general political situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, Kirkuk, and the disputed areas, according to Sheikh Omar.
