SDF commander Mazloum Abdi, known as Mazloum Kobani, said in a tweet that he had a “productive meeting” with commander of the Russian forces in Syria Alexander Chaiko on Sunday, December 1.
“We agreed to deploy Russian troops in Amuda, Tel Tamir and Ain Issa for the security and stability of the region,” the SDF commander tweeted.
“We look forward to further joint efforts in the interest of our two countries.”
Turkey began a cross-border offensive against the Kurds in Syria last month after Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from the area. At one point around 300,000 people fled their homes and 100,000 remain displaced, according to the UN.
Russia also landed attack helicopters and troops at a sprawling air base in northern Aleppo province near the border with Turkey vacated by US forces.
Russia, which as a close ally of President Bashar al-Assad has emerged as the key geopolitical player in Syria, deployed military policemen near the Turkish border as part of a deal agreed with Turkey last month in the Russian city of Sochi.
Under the plan, agreed by presidents Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin, Syrian Kurdish forces are to withdraw more than 30 km from the Turkish border.
