Kurds welcome talks between Baghdad and Washington: KDP official

A senior member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) stressed on the need to make crucial decisions in strategic negotiations with the United States based on the consensus of the country's political forces, adding that the Kurdistan Region welcomes strategic talks between Washington and Baghdad.

"The Kurds welcome any strategic negotiations between Baghdad and Washington, and it should be taken into account in the negotiations on military issues that the security situation remains unstable and the threat of ISIS is still imminent," Baghdad Al-Youm quoted the KDP official Saeed Mamozini as saying.

"The Kurds have always insisted on establishing balanced relations with all countries, especially the United States, as a country with a political, military and economic position in the world," he said.

The KDP official stressed: "The presence of Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in the possible future negotiations is considered as representing all Iraqi identity groups, including the Kurds. But important and crucial decisions in strategic dialogue must be made by all political forces."

It should be noted that Fawzi Hariri, the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government in the Iraqi negotiating team, stated that the Iraqi negotiating delegation, including representatives of the Kurdistan Region, had previously held talks during the presidency of the former US President, Donald Trump, and that the Iraqi negotiating team has not called for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

Hariri added: "The next round of talks between Baghdad and Washington is scheduled to be held on Wednesday via video conference."
