US backs KRG not Kurdistan parties: representative

Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to the United States Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman said on Thursday, May 6, that US considers the Iraqi Kurds to be a strategic ally and the Region as a peaceful and safe place for the US to operate.

“The US supports the Kurdistan Regional Government, not Kurdistan’s parties,” she said, adding that the US wants a strong Kurdistan Region within Iraq.

She went on to add that relations between Washington and Erbil remain at a good level and that the new Biden administration is well informed about the Region.

Abdul Rahman told NRT that the US was “concerned with” the KRG during the time of the independence referendum, but added that those chilly relations passed as the issue faded.

Abdul Rahman further stated that she does not represent the KRG in the US as a partisan person.

She is a member of the KDP’s Leadership Council, receiving the tenth-highest number of votes at the party congress in 2010.

Asked about the Peshmerga, Abdul Rahman said that US officials always salute the Region’s armed forces and back efforts to make them a truly national force.

“The US wants the reform and unification of the Peshmerga to be done as soon as possible,” she said.

She added that the US has convoyed its concerns regarding the journalists and activists from Duhok who are imprisoned.
